Soup, cigarettes and double identities
Andrei Serban’s Big Baby starring Andrei Serban opened at the Museum of the Peasant in Bucharest on a freezing December night. Andrei Serban’s Lear(a) – the updated edition, updated sets, etc – opened on the same night at the Bulandra Theatre in Bucharest. When choosing whether to see the seasoned director at work with Romania’s best actresses or his young double acting in an experimental production in an eat-in smoke-in do-it-yourself show (with the security of the former playing in repertory) I ventured to the latter. The show was a sketch for three actors, the actors were contending with a wide variety of noises and distractions, but the audience was dedicated while chain-smoking and the claustrophobic apartment scenes between delusional neighbors and a newborn middle-aged lost son recalled the communist apartment blocks decaying in the frost outside. The two Andrei’s did well.
